Joanna & Alastair

Joanna and Alastair tied the knot in their home country England in June, after planning their entire wedding from Melbourne. Read on for more details onto hear all about their life-long love, Joanna’s dress search, and their beautiful farm wedding!

The Love Story

We go back to the tender ages of 12 and 13 years-old where we met at a youth camp for military children. My (now) husband became close friends with my older brother back then so we knew of each other but didn’t ever pay much attention to one another. Over the years our paths crossed briefly but that was it, until the day my brother got married. The seating plan for the meal had us next to each other (which no doubt my brother had his hand in) and so the story starts there. It was only a few months later that he got a job offered in Melbourne and I was on the plane following him to the other side of the world!

The Proposal

From an early stage in our relationship its safe to say we both knew we wanted to marry one another! We had booked an air balloon trip in the Yarra Valley for a New Years celebration. We drove up, after I had just come off a night shift, and headed up the day before and explored the local area. As we walked around a reservoir enjoying the wild kangaroos and sunshine, it wasthere he caught me off guard (mainly because I was still in a post night shift daze) and got down
on one knee. It was a quick yes from me!

The Venue

Being Brits living in Australia we knew finding a venue and planning a wedding from abroad would provide some challenges but I think it just made us less fussy! After a few searches on the internet and contacting venues we decided on an outdoor venue, mainly because it best reflected our chilled and natural vibe we wanted for the day. We were relying on good weather which was quite risky given the UK’s unpredictable forecast but we went with it anyway (and thankfully Mother Nature was on our side).

The Dress Search

I was thrilled that my Mum was able to come on holiday here and come with me dress hunting. Designer Bridal House was the first store we went to and I can honestly say I loved every single gown I tried on. I’ve never felt so beautiful or confident before. We went to a few others after that and once my Mum left I went hunting on my own (with her on FaceTime). It is safe to say no other dress felt as good so I quickly returned to the original dress I fell in love with. I felt most myself in this dress and turned out to be perfect for the outdoor and sunny wedding day we had. Saying all this, it wasn’t an easy decision, I genuinely loved them all!

The Big Day

In general, the best part of the day for both of us was having all our friends and family together for us, especially as we had been abroad and not seen so many people for so long. It really was a day of love, laughter and sunshine. A main favourite of ours was the ceremony. We had a traditional church wedding in the local village where my family home is, we had different friends and family taking part in the ceremony, the church was filled with joy.

Advice?

There is such a pressure to make things perfect, no doubt something might not go as planned but no one really cares! People are there for you whether it’s rain or shine. Try not get caught up on small things, be kind and enjoy the planning.

Just be careful you don’t give too much free booze if you’re fiancé football (soccer) boys are attending!
